So, I was at the doctors office today and then subsequently the pharmacy, and I can’t begin to tell you my amazement at how kids, I mean really small kids, speak and act toward their parents. “I don’t like you, I am not listening to you” and the parents replied with “You don’t want me to start counting, please stop doing that (seven or eight times)” and we wonder why the youth of today is so disrespectful to their elders.
Well, here is my summary; I am a product of the 70′s and 80″s (yeah I know they rocked ! ) when we grew up, our parents told us one time and one time only to stop something and we listened. How many times did mom do the hirky jerky reaching every which way she could in the green station wagon, packed full of kids not seat belted in, to give you a good one. That’s all it took was one good swat or the “look” and we knew we better shape up or we would get “our butts blistered” Maybe it is time to return to yester year??????????????
I am a single mother of a now 16 year old daughter. I have to be honest and admit that when her father left (she was 1 and I didn’t have this realization until many years later) I feel for the self emposed guilt trip and gave in way more than I should have. I can speak from experience and a little regret, that it does come back to bite you and bite you hard. So stand your ground and enforce your rules today.
So do yourself a favor, be strict, be demanding, be a little scary( at least in their eyes, a little fear went a long way when I was young) expect greatness from them, don’t buy them every new gadget that comes out just because their friends have one, snoop through their emails, voicemails, text messages, who is paying for all their technology freedom anyway? THAT’S RIGHT PARENTS, YOU ARE !
Our children are the future, it is our jobs to get them headed in the right direction. So start your snooping now, you may be surprised to find out what your kids are up to.
HAPPY HUNTING AND PARENTING =)
